Association
Takes Delivery of New Ambulance
On Monday,
January 18 the Berlin Ambulance Association received the newest member of the
Station 500 fleet. The new 2010 Ford F-450 Type I custom built ambulance
will replace the 2002 Freightliner and take over the unit designation 501.
The
ambulance was built by Horton and features a uniquely designed patient
compartment inspired by suggestions from the Berlin EMS truck committee.
Despite having a box 10" shorter in overall length from ambulance 502, the
design of this ambulance is much more open and allows increased space for crew
members to sit and work. This design was obtained by reconfiguring the
cabinets into a more efficient manner, while still maintaining the capability to
simultaneously transport two patients in the supine position. The patient
compartment also has a built-in LifeGaurd SRS airbag system to ensure crew and
patient safety in the event of a collision.
Up front
the truck features a built-in navigation system to aid crews in finding
addresses in uncommon remote or outlying areas of the county. The truck is
powered by a 6.4 L Powerstroke diesel engine with an automatic transmission. The truck
is also equipped with four-wheel drive, a feature voted on by the majority of
crew members, to assist with rural response challenges faced during the rough
Somerset County winters.
The
ambulance is white with blue and gold stripes identical to those on 502.
The truck features reflective blue and white chevron striping on the rear and
LED warning lights mounted on the inside of the doors (visible when the doors
are open) to help increase visibility and improve crew safety while working
along roadways. Emergency warning systems in the truck include all LED
strobe lighting and a Whelen siren.
